Shanoaha Smith received her B.A. from Whitworth University and recently graduated with an M.A. in Asian Studies from Georgetown University’s Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service. Her current research explores Japanese history during the late nineteenth century to mid-twentieth century and centers on the intersection of religion—including Islam—and politics.
In her future research, she hopes to apply a history of emotions perspective to examine how Japanese policies toward religion were manifested in the everyday lives of citizens. Previously, she spent four years teaching English in a Japanese high school in Osaka Prefecture as a participant of the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program.
