Dr. Seyfi Kenan received his B.A. from Marmara University in Istanbul, and pursued his graduate studies at Columbia University in the City of New York. He completed his graduate studies with a doctoral degree at Columbia University in 2003 by using an interdisciplinary method with a concentration on the history of intellectual thought, the educational sciences, social studies and philosophy. He has carried out, as a research coordinator, a number of research projects for a variety of program (1996-2003) at the Middle East Institute, School of International and Public Affiars of Columbia University. He is currently full-time professor at Marmara University. Since 1990, he has been contributing editor in the Encyclopedia of Islam (44 volumes with around 17.000 entries) covering various social and historical aspects of Islamic religion, culture and civilization published by ISAM Publications in Turkey. In addition, he is also managing editor of the Journal of Ottoman Studies/ Osmanlı Araştırmaları published in Istanbul.
