The Maydan is an online publication of the AbuSulayman Center for Global Islamic Studies at George Mason University. The Maydan team is composed of the Center's faculty members and graduate students both within and outside GMU.
As we promised earlier, Maydan continues to present content from the Sectarianism, Identity and Conflict in Islamic Contexts: Historical and Contemporary Perspectives conference held at George Mason University in April 2016. We hope this series will help the broader public to develop a healthier engagement with the concept of sectarianism, an often misunderstood phenomenon. Please also see essays from other presenters of the conference on our pages. Video recordings will be added to these essays over the next few weeks. We are presenting here, in partnership with Status Audio Journal, the video recording of Rice University historian Dr. Ussama Makdisi‘s keynote address at the conference.
