Rising Above Fear: Distinguished Speaker Omid Safi

Dr. Omid Safi, Director of Duke University’s Islamic Studies Center, will examine the spiritual depths of Islam, the misguided association of Islam to terrorism, and the pitfalls of xenophobia.
Omid Safi is the Director of Duke University’s Islamic Studies Center and chairs both the Study of Islam and the Islamic Mysticism Group at the American Academy of Religion. He is a frequently sought speaker on Islam, and he has appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, PBS, NPR, NBC, CNN, and other international media.
Omid is currently the editor of the volume Progressive Muslims: On Justice, Gender, and Pluralism, which offers an understanding of Islam rooted in social justice, gender equality, and religious and ethnic pluralism. His works include Politics of Knowledge in Premodern Islam, Voices of Islam: Voices of Change, and Memories of Muhammad, which covers the biography and legacy of the Prophet Muhammad. He has forthcoming volumes on the famed mystic Rumi, contemporary Islamic debates in Iran, and American Islam.

A book signing and reception will follow the Friday night lecture. Coffee and pastries will be available Saturday morning at 9 a.m.
