1st Sufi Studies Graduate Student Symposium

March 10, 2018 @ 8:00 am - March 11, 2018 @ 5:00 pm

About the Symposium/Areas of Interest

Areas of interest include topics in the context of Sufi studies from multidisciplinary perspectives. This symposium, organized by graduate students, aims to bring together the growing community of researchers and interested parties to discover possible directions of Sufi Studies. The conference aspires to create a forum for those exploring the relationships between Sufi Studies and theoretical, philosophical, literary, historical, methodological, sociological, psychological, anthropological, architectural, political themes and various art forms of Islamic Studies.

We hope to provide an opportunity for interactive, deliberative, and interdisciplinary engagement with scholarly work in progress by gathering graduate students and experts of the field together. For committed and serious proposals, we intend to provide each participant with 20 minutes dedicated solely to his or her paper. We will expect all participants to arrive prepared to discuss their own work and engage their fellow participants in substantial depth.

We expect that those invited to present papers will remain present for the duration of the two-day conference in order to engage the other participants in a true exchange of ideas.

Lunch and refreshments will be provided on both days, and a dinner will be held on Saturday night. Partial travel reimbursements will be available depending on funding.

After the symposium, papers ready for publication should be sent by March 31, 2018 and the Institute for Sufi Studies will publish the First Graduate Student Symposium Proceedings by June 1, 2018.
