Xenophobia and Islamophobia in the Modern Era

A panel discussion co-hosted by the IIR & AVACGIS on xenophobia & Islamophobia

In recent years, the United States has witnessed an increase in xenophobic and Islamophobic rhetoric.  The prevalence of inaccurate information about immigrants and Muslims has resulted in significant fear and mistrust in many communities. This panel discussion will present facts about these two specific groups in order to promote greater understanding and empower audience members to engage in informed activism.

This event is free and open to the public with registration. Light refreshments will be served.

Guest speakers to include: 

Ms. Amber Jamil is the Executive Director for the American Pakistan Foundation and leads the effort to build lasting ties between the US and Pakistan, strengthen the Pakistani American diaspora and Pakistan’s resilient communities through innovative, multi-sector partnerships. Read more

Dr. Patricia Maulden is an Associate Professor of Conflict Resolution and Director of the Dialogue and Difference Project with The School for Conflict Analysis and Resolution at George Mason University. Read more

Dr. Besheer Mohamed is a senior researcher at Pew Research Center. He is involved in the design and implementation of many of the Center’s domestic religion polls. He specializes in studying religious minorities in the U.S., with a specific focus on Muslim Americans. Read more

Dr. Ahmet Tekelioglu works with the Ali Vural Ak Center for Global Islamic Studies and focuses his research on the American religious landscape and the politics of ethno-religious identities. Read more
